Story highlights

Mayank made his presence felt by sending down 150 plus Kmph rockets during his first two IPL games this season, winning Player of the Match awards in both.

The BCCI selection committee looks to be impressed with IPL 2024 pace-bowling sensation Mayank Yadav since his debut earlier this season, and per the latest reports, wishes to take his case forward. Having played just three matches thus far this season, Mayank made headlines for clocking over 150 Kmph consistently, and the selectors are keen on having a fit Mayank on board for the Australia Tests starting in November later this year.

Although Mayank continues to recover from the latest injury he suffered during his return game against Mumbai Indians - his second this season, the BCCI selectors want to monitor his case and handle it with utmost care to ensure he remains fit and available for selection for the tour Down Under.

Meanwhile, the board has decided against fast-tracking him into the international side and instead wants him to work on a few aspects before unleashing him at the top stage.

Per the Indian Express, the lanky seamer will head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru following his IPL 2024 stint, where he will undergo a medical assessment before the fast-bowling coach Troy Cooley and the biomechanics experts take his case in their hands.

The selectors want a fit Mayank Yadav to first be part of India ‘A’ squad for the Australia series in June and July before roping him into the senior team for the five-match series. It is also understood that minor tweaks will be made to his bowling action, in running mechanics, landing and follow-through.

“The most important thing is he has to be pain-free before any formal training begins. He shouldn’t experience pain at any stage of his running. Once that is done, then the focus will shift to bio-mechanics and bowling,” Ramji Srinivasan - the strength and conditioning coach at the MRF Pace Foundation told The Indian Express.

Per him, some work needs to be done on Mayank’s back-foot landing to avoid back injuries in future.

“Similarly, in the follow-through, his left hand is getting locked inside the hip and it can lead to side strains. And based on what bio-mechanics throws up, he has to work accordingly,” the expert added.

‘Plan for him is set’

Sources close to the information added that BCCI plans to send a young group of bowlers for the 'A' tour.

Meanwhile, since making his first-class debut in 2022, Mayank has yet to play a long-format match, and BCCI is aware of this.

“The plan is to gradually increase his workload. If he is fit and ready, the ‘A’-team tour will be a good developmental tour for him. If not, we will see him in the Duleep Trophy,” the sources close to the information said.

As things stand, Mayank is unlikely to feature in the remainder of IPL 2024.
